Individuals should be free to chase after social justice issues on their own accord but not drag the project's feet through them using resources not intended for it and would be better spent elsewhere. Just don't grant $15,000 to someone for removing the term 'slave' from build systems and the like. You shouldn't be forced to 'change society' by that vocal minority ready to call you out for doing nothing 'for the public good'.
