A bit of cable management. A I'll need to get some shorter patch cables -

@theru This looks great. That's about what I had in mind to replace my server. I'm not convinced that my connection speed is up for this....

@beni I had to get a cable connection to get some more upload (on the plus side I now have a failover setup) -

@theru I called our local cable provider to ask them when they plan to roll out IPv6. They told me that there are not such plans to provide IPv6 connectivity. That's why I stick with VDSL.

@beni ipv6 is non existing here. I have played a bit around with tunneling it (I can just setup a tunnel in pfsense) but it's not something that is essential for me. -

@theru I tunneled it before. Not I've got native IPv6 but the router doesn't support routing subnets... Now I have to replace the router.

@beni maybe it's time to build a new one :-) -

@theru My OpenBSD router is just fine it only doesn't do VDSL-Bridging. That's why I'm using another router as VDSL-Bridge. That's the one I should replace. I'm just having a hard time finding a proper VDSL Bridge/Modem.

@beni I just get a vdsl modem from my dsl/vdsl provider (I work for them so it's somewhat easier for me) -

@theru I got a bloody FritzBox from my provider which doesn't route delegated IPv6 subnets nor does it have a pure bridge mode.

@beni really ? I thought the Fritzbox did that. -

@theru Maybe the more recent ones. For the one I have I have to telnet into the box and set the route manually - to be repeated after every reboot.

@beni telnet... might be a good idea to just get a modem. (if your provider does vectoring it might be good if the modem does that as well) -
[Moved] beni@wirebug.ch (beni@mastodon.sdf.org)'s status on Saturday, 12-May-2018 09:48:59 EDT [Moved] beni@wirebug.ch
@theru What's vectoring? (Remember, I don't work for a provider.... ok, technically I do because our schools is a provider, too...)
-
theru (theru@pleroma-in.ouda.space)'s status on Saturday, 12-May-2018 09:52:51 EDT theru
@beni vectoring means that the DSLAM does a lot of calculation about crosstalk between the lines in the cable (crosstalk has an impact on the speed of the line) and takes that out. But if your router/modem is old it's unlikely that the DSLAM does vectoring.

@theru My provider offers to sell a ZyXEL VMG1312 Bridge - maybe I should get one of these.

@beni probably wouldn't be bad getting it from your provider (here you either get a modem or a gateway from your provider with your line) -
[Moved] beni@wirebug.ch (beni@mastodon.sdf.org)'s status on Saturday, 12-May-2018 09:58:34 EDT [Moved] beni@wirebug.ch
@theru They would lend me a newer FritzBox for free. I'm just not really convinced that this would then work...

@beni Sometimes cable is a bit easier - most of the modems/gateways I know of there can be set in bridge mode. -

@theru Yeah, I'd get cable if our provide didn't still live in the 20th century.

@beni Cable technology is old. We're currently switching to docsis 3.1 (newer cable technology). I still think it stinks - even if you can get up to 10G full duplex. Fiber is a lot nicer to work with. -

@theru Lool, Fiber, Here... not in the next 50 years.... ;)

@beni Fiber - it's something you eat in the morning :) -

@theru yeah, but only if the meat and the dairy products run out...
