@lain @sampo Specifically, I learned at one of the memorials this week that there was a wall upgrade project in the early 60s or late 50s, where they has soldiers and athletes climbing various designs of wall to evaluate which would be effective stoppers, and then they upgraded certain segments of the wall.
The memorial (between Nordbahnhof and Brewdog) has archive footage of these pretend-escapees.
That type of wall was tall enough that you had to stand on your friend's shoulders to touch the top. And like has already been mentioned, that gives any guard plenty of time to mow you down.
