@neomorph For what it's worth, I've heard a lot of good things about KX Studio http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org if that's more your speed.
I prefer Slackware because it forces you to set up and understand your environment, which in turn helps you understand the tools you're trying to learn.
There's definitely a learning curve, as there is with pretty much anything. But if you relax into it, ask lots of questions, and hit your head against the table several times, it's super rewarding (and stable).
