@starbreaker @sowth specifically, the pmmx variant will do nicely. It can be slow if you use KDE but LXQt runs great on my P3/500 with 256.
Dual booting with a BSD would give you lots of toys to play with. Should work fine since we use grub now; it can chainload BSD
