From a strictly software perspective, it would be a significant, objective improvement if Mastodon was excised wholesale from the fediverse, because pretty much all of our problems that aren't a result of our limitations, are a result of Mastodon being poorly designed and poorly executed.

Unfortunately, we don't live in some world where just the software is the consideration, and Mastodon has a large community that at least some of which we don't want to lose.  So instead we get to work around a fundamentally-flawed piece of software, much like the original WWW did around arpanet.

(Or any Windows app works around MS's kernel being really poorly-architected with a lot of features just slapped on overtime and turning into a sprawling morass of legacy code and undefined behaviours.)

That's the fundamental Mastodon problem: the software is bad and only getting worse, breaking the rest of the Fediverse in new and interesting ways.  I use the "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" thing Microsoft uses because while I feel it may not have been Mastodon's original purpose it's certainly what their actions communicate now: their response to pretty much any external software having problems with them is that you should clearly join the Mastodon mothership.

(Pleroma isn't much better with that behaviour, but they aren't in as strong a position to be pushy with it, and I think everyone except That One Dev understand that.  They're a minority even compared to GNU social right now, though the community is growing.)

Depends how you count. Not if you count instances:
