What if you implemented the trending functionality into that list, so that when I search for "cats", I actually see #catsofmastodon instead of "catsadon", "catsandacousticinstruments", "catsanddogslivingtogether", and "catsashumans"?
That improves discoverability while maintaining the "I'm interested in this" aspect of search.
