"Council wants ‘English first’ policy on shop signs" - #Strathfield wouldn't have any shops outside of its dingy and miserable mini-mall if it weren't for the people who put up those lovely (and yes, often cheerfully tacky) cosmopolitan signs. Leave them alone to carry on saving your suburb from desolation, you ghastly bigots. http://microblog.mjd.id.au/url/12409

Council wants 'English first' policy on shop signs – what does it mean for multicultural Australia?
      from The Conversation
Australia has no policy designating English as the official language, but an explicit 'English first' policy for shop signs would treat speakers of every other language as second-class citizens.

"Multiculturalism" is a terrible word. Like "wholemeal", it implies something you're not going to enjoy, but you should grimly endure because it's good for you. #AU policy should always have been "cosmopolitanism". Nobody would ever name a cocktail the "multicultural". Eww. What's in a multicultural? Wheat beer, yoghurt, and blue cheese garnished with a sourdough crouton?
