i played a couple hours of yooka-laylee yesterday and i have a few preliminary opinions:
+ sounds are fantastic
+ music is pretty dang good at points
+ looks a lot more polished than i was expecting. still looks like a unity game, but a lot nicer looking than most
+ a strangely self-aware yet enjoyable sense of humour
+ gameplay mechanics are pretty damn solid
+ the sort of open world play they've got going on suits the collectathon genre well

- music gets repetitive/generic at certain points
- story isn't hugely interesting, feels like it was an afterthought, not to mention the lack of character interactions between the good and bad? did i skip a cutscene or two by accident?
- the dialogue is annoying and slow and idk how they made text and the menus look so bad but they did
- game definitely has a tiered feel to it where it was developed in chunks/layers for a kickstarter, rather than smoothly fleshed out like other games-

there was also a bit of camera weirdness that made looking around feel tedious on top of some elements not fitting on the screen when playing in ultrawide, but i mean, most folks aren't playing in ultrawide, even if that is something most games should account for these days

overall it seems like a solid collectathon with decent pacing, a lot of room for exploring areas as you feel like it, and a large world that (although not hugely diverse/interesting to look at) achieved ime a sense that i would never be able to explore it all, without areas feeling like they were all the same. practically got lost in the first level but never stopped having something to do
story and originality are lacking otherwise
