Has Star Wars fandom always been this toxic? I'm a fan of the movies, but not part of the fandom, per se, since I don't really get involved with any kind of Star Wars "community."

This type of "criticism" seems new and very much connected to race and gender, because I don't remember criticism of the objectively shittier prequels being this toxic (in fact, some of the criticism was that aliens were racist caricatures).

Was this toxicity always lying dormant among fans or is it something new? I fear it's the former and that the previous 6 movies were just so white and male that it wasn't obvious until now.
