honestly, pleroma in a way is much more empowering than mastodon can be

it takes about an hour to setup and is able to run on extremely cheap hosting (it runs happily on a raspberry pi)

this is of course at the expense of it being somewhat less featureful at the moment and lacking a lot of administration tools, but ultimately it gives more people the ability to setup their own fediverse instance
