    At some point I probably will have emoticons in the UI but I won't have them federate, that is just a BAD IDEA TM for a variety of reasons, most of them social.  You're essentially having a lexicon pushed upon you from different instances, not to mention the difficulties of resolving conflicts when two different instances use the same code and so on and so forth.  I probably will make some sort of admin panel that will display shortcodes observed in incoming messages that do not have an emoticon at present, though.

      I use emoticon to distinguish from emojii, even though most have been calling them emojii, because these are using shortcodes, not the proper unicode.  If you use the unicode strings, then you are never at risk of not seeing them unless your system fonts do not include emojii.
