    i remember when i first started playing online games that required hosting your own servers, and hosting on your own desktop pc at home was common. now if you want to host any game over the internet, even your friends will get upset if the server isn't hosted professionally for optimal performance and latency

    good that we're upping our standards, bad that it's hard for folks who haven't learned how to manage remote servers or afford the upkeep to actually host games for friends

      i wonder what it'd be like if a co-op purchased a server farm or two and gave out (or rented out super cheap) space to certain folks to host shit for the benefit of the community.

      federation instances, game servers, important resources to browse and download, personal and professional sites designed by and for the marginalised. stuff like that

      seems like it'd be too expensive and wouldn't turn enough of a profit to sustain itself but it would be incredible if it did happen
