On a happier note, we're finally at a point where multiple compatible clients and servers are viable; so we're not exactly tied to the success of just one project.

The network will continue to exist, and people will still be a part of it and develop for it, and ultimately extend it. What people miss is that the fediverse has been growing in sporadic bursts since its inception.
