@katiekats Lets consider one of the changes to explain how I feel this is a thoughtless, value-less original.  In the original the flashlight was a separate item you had to use as a seperate item from the weapons, so you had to chose between getting around and fighting effectively, since only a couple weapons illuminate things well and their ammunition is expensive (the plasma rifle and the BFG).  The levels were largely designed around that, giving a lot of nooks and crannies an enemy can blind-side you from, making even the imps threatening enemies in tight quarters because they can come from unseen quarters, and making the higher end ammunition more valuable also since they illuminate things too.

The BFG edition makes the flashlight armour mounted so you can use it with any weapon, and it doesn't change any of the level design or enemies, and as a result, it is a remaster that has no appreciation for what made the original source material good, and cheapens much of the design that made the original good to begin with.  As a result, it's a much poorer game, and I feel a lot of the negative sentiment that exists these days comes as a result of playing the much inferior remastered edition.  This is one of many problems with it, but it's the easiest one to explain to someone that hasn't played both.

Ah right, so it made it more filled with tension, and you had to be a bit tactical about it's usage/using a gun.

Whereas in the new one...it's -just- a shooter as such, cos a lot of that tension is gone when you don't have to manage things.

It updated for ease and accesibility and all, but forgot why those things were how they were.

            I get ya.

@katiekats I'm not even against them redoing it as a more action-based shooter, Doom 4 showed that ends up being quite good, but they changed the central mechanics of the game without changing any of the game design around it, and the two don't really work.

Is understandable really. It being a action-based shooter would be fine as you note. The original just wasn't build to be that way, so the changes are just kinda..jammed on.
