@enkiv2 this essay attempts to apply 'Society of the Spectacle' analysis to social media, which is a good thing to do. The problem is that it's proposed solutions are as impractical as telling people not to use the net at all (I tried this for a year - book forthcoming). Which is like proposing living in the woods as a solution to the environmental crisis. Running away from pollution doesn't stop it chasing you, and the same is true of the Spectacle.
@enkiv2 my family and most of my friends are on the other side of the world. Unless I want to spend a fortune on postage, toll calls, and flghts, the only way to spend more time with them is via the net. True, I don't have to use FB for that, and I don't. But what to us? I suspect talking about potential replacements that are fundamentally different from FB (non-profit/ cooperative, #FreeCode / #OpenSource etc) would make the essay more useful to most people.
