    2017 has been an excellent year for my consulting practice. In fact, yesterday I had two meetings (one with prospect, one with client) which will result in more work: strategic marketing plan, brand platform, brand roll out, product brand management, etc. The work keeps coming, which is a blessing.

    It's been tempting to consider creating an agency rather than being a one man band but the thought of having the responsibility for employees again is not attractive. Kind of a catch 22.

      @Combaticus sub contractors. Much easier.

        @ChrisWilson Yes, good point. I made a decision last year when launching my practice that I would not get into the sub game. Mainly, I didn't want to get sucked into managing freelancers and I didn't want to be responsible for work product that I could not control. Both reasons are why I struggle with the idea of adding employees, too. I guess there's my answer, huh?

      @Combaticus sounds familiar to me.

      if I may...

      I dropped out in the late 1990's, was partner in a small yet national tech training and consulting firm, got tired of mgmt and been lone wolf since.

      Not long ago got fired up about my dev project and ALSO thinking about building and managing a team again. Rusty skills and...

      ...things have changed. Employee/employer relationships aren't the same.

      Just sayin'.

        @GluedToTheScreen The employee/employer thing is real. It's one of the reasons I wanted out. I'm in NY state and the laws are getting more and more problematic for anyone with traditional values running a company.

        How has consulting treated you? Sounds like you've been doing a-ok.

          @Combaticus consulting was great and enjoyed not having to manage a team of techs... but I put head down, lost focus, and eventually burned out. All by myself. Led to rethinking entire business. A couple of years ago I got totally immersed in an idea and have been fresh ever since. It's everything now.

          I'm curious... what kind of consulting do you do?
