Depends how well you understand the problem?
There could be something subtle and important that you miss by not studying what's there, seeing why stuff was done certain ways
Course that kinda stuff can be easy to miss even if you do read it
I think if you know the problem well and the odds are good you'll produce a working solution quickly, then the old code is maybe more liability than benefit
If you don't, you may have to rewrite more than once or screw around a lot
