After attempting to blow air into the bansuri flute opening, I read a bit about flutes and found that air has to be blown across it and it is the pressure differential that causes tones to be produced. Now, after correcting the mistake, I seem to require less effort and noise produced seems to have reduced.

A note on where to blow air - instructors seem to be divided on whether to blow air inside the hole or across it. I seem to get the best result when I blow across it with the air partly going inside and partly outside.
