The popular image of gayness doesn't help an ordinary teenager just trying to fit in at school. After all, they're not there in the parade, wearing the colourful costume. They're at their desk in a hoodie, trying to finish an assignment, and being gay isn't part of the "student" identity. It's in the parade, safely away from normal people.
