okay, i see a lot of people talking about how notifications, likes/faves, boosts, etc are bad because they gamify interaction. i'm not so sure those are necessarily the problem, but instead our attitude about them might be the problem?

the way i've been looking at these numbers lately...has made me feel less alone. people agree with me sometimes, or at the very least seem to care about what i have to say. it can be a nice feeling if it's not taken too far.

it seems similar - to me, at least - to making someone smile/laugh. it's a positive reaction that signals that you did something the people around you care about.

whether the people around you are decent people or not, and whether the things you do are actually worth making them smile, is a different story

so whether these numbers are a bad thing or a good thing...all seems to depend on who you are and how you look at it. it's largely about perspective.
