    First major study of employee behavior upon switching from conventional floor plan to #openfloorplan offices reveals a greater than two-thirds decline in face to face interaction, a more than 50% increase in electronic interaction, and a decline in productivity in the #openplan offices (specifics of the productivity decline were not shared by the companies under study)

      @deutrino The link 404s for me, but I can guess one of the major reasons for the decline in face-to-face: headphones. Open offices are noisey as heck, so everyone wears headphones to block out the distractions. This makes it much easier to talk to someone by IM or email, even if they sit right beside you, since you don't want to interrupt their zone when they've got the earbuds in.

        @ink_slinger That was indeed mentioned in the article. I know I had huge over-the-ear studio monitors on 90% of the time while working in bullpens and the like.
