    i think the reason a lot of board games are good to think about as a creative medium is that they force the designer to do "impedance matching" between the complexity of what the player does and what the game does in response, by making the player perform the game's role too. it (mostly!) avoids that feeling of when you're playing some video game and something happens as a consequence of your actions and you just can't work out the mechanics of why
