    What is Millennial Socialism?

    https://www.the-american-interest.com/2018/07/24/what-is-millennial-socialism/

Not a bad article. It's got some pretty sweeping generalizations that I disagree with, but a lot of it does resonate and describes my beliefs relatively well: "Marxist-anarchist" is kinda the right vibe. I don't want a highly centralized, Soviet-style socialism. And I'm not even necessarily opposed to markets as long as we make it so things like housing aren't commodified.

I think the article could have used an editor, because it has some obvious typographical errors (e.g., Democratic Socialists of America of America), but also because it seems to get kinda tangled up in it's own assumptions and isn't always clear if it's talking about socialism or a more liberal, social democracy (though, to be fair, many who identify as socialists aren't always clear on that point themselves). Overall, though, it's a decent, if imperfect, summary of the new left.

Well, the new and increasingly mainstream left. There are, obviously, still many people who are far more radical than this.

@inkslinger Thanks for this. @grok may want to weigh in on this, too.

@inkslinger @grok It seems that millennial socialism is reformism of the Labour Party through the ballot box, on the one hand, and 'workers' control, autonomism...' on the other. I agree more with the latter than the former. I wonder, though, where the direct-action tactics are, the likes of Gene Sharp's non-violent civil disobedience, the tax and rent strikes, in all of this.

@socialistsettler @grok Yeah, despite its talk of the anarchist influence, the article mostly ignores direct action. I'd suggest that's a big flaw of the article since, until recently, many young people were more likely to "do politics" through direct action rather than (or in addition to) voting in elections.

@inkslinger @grok I couldn't agree more on direct-action tactics in lieu of 'voting'. What those under-20 in age are experiencing, however, is, to my mind as an education worker, a sense that there is little solidarity amongst those their age, nor many who are willing to risk their own 'careers' to help them out so as to unionize or, at least, work in concert against their bosses.
