My almost-10-year-old laptop is finally starting to go on me...past the point that Linux can keep it going, I think.

Now I'm wondering what to replace it with. #Chromebooks seem ideal for the kind of fast, low cost device I'm looking for. But I've been making a point of moving away from #Google services over the past few years, so jumping into #Chrome OS would be rather counter to that.

Ideas for cheap #laptops that can run #Linux (*buntu) with few or no issues?

@ink_slinger I'd advise against a Chromebook unless you are okay with minimum functionality. Anything beyond the native ChromeOS apps is pretty clunky.

My recommendation is a two or three year old ultrabooks from eBay. my two cents.

@Modern_Industrial Yeah, I think Chromebooks are almost like tablets with a built in keyboard. For quick tasks, they're great, but anything more complex is probably a challenge. You can install Linux on some of them, with a minor hardware tweak, afaik, but then you've voided the warranty, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Used ThinkPads still seem to be a pretty standard/solid choice for Linux users. Good to know.

@ink_slinger Just check the model before diving in with Linux. Some friendlier than others.

@ink_slinger chrome book with coreboot and whatever Distro you want. X 86 ones have better support, performance might be disappointing though

@ink_slinger I'm in the market to replace my 17" mid-2010 MBPro (sadness). I'm waiting on reviews of the new AMD Ryzen Mobile based machines.. HP, Acer, ASUS are what I'm waiting on.. I think ASUS is coming out with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700U with an Nvidia card along side the Vega 10..
