@codesections @mooshoe @mariusz @mike great discussion here folks! Few thoughts from me (this may be a couple Toots)...

Our bubble is pretty niche (FOSS) so we're unlikely to ever get 10s of thousands of members. Add to that the fact that there are other instances within this niche too - linux rocks and Foss.social to name just 2, that niche is further diluted.

To me, that's a good thing. Like codesections said - we want to be part of the community, not have to run it.

That's also the reason I decided to go with Masto.host when I started fosstodon.org. I'm a technical guy, and Mike is a sysadmin, so we definitely have the skills to host ourselves, but like I said, we want to part of the community. Plus @hugo is incredible - we don't have to worry about a single thing, just our (very low) monthly fee.

If we don't get another member, that's fine. We have around 500 now and the conversation (like this one) is dynamic, interesting and most importantly, civil.

We may continue to grow, and if we do, great. But Mike and I will do our utmost to continue to be a part of the community.

Our patrons make that a lot easier (thanks everyone!) and I'm sure there will be many willing volunteers to mod as we grow, just like @joseph.
