      Sounds like it's rather easy to do something similar with XMPP, GNU Social and other free software decentralized communication networks too...

        @arunisaac xmpp yes, gnusocial does not tell if you are online or not. anyway designers/programmers should take it into account.

          GNU Social does indicate when each post was posted. So, that can be used to infer possible timezone, sleeping time, etc.

            @arunisaac but it the person doesn't post you don't know. Other protocols tell you if it's connected in real time without user intervention.

              Yes, I agree you can't tell if a user is connected in real time. But, I'm just saying that there is other information leaked by GNU Social that could potentially be used by a malicious actor.

          @ghostdancer @arunisaac Most XMPP clients allow users to choose whether to appear 'online', 'offline', 'busy', 'unavailable' and so on. Thunderbird has a built-in client that does not allow this choice (another reason to use a real IM client instead).
