    I'm missing something here, from what I read -- people hate wilw bc he reports offensive toots and maintains large mute/block lists for himself ... so he can enjoy mastodon.

    he doesn't have to hear anyone's shit. just like you don't have to hear his. the magic of building your own timeline :O

    celebrity or "quasi-celebrity" has nothing to do with acting like a human, because you have angsty feelings against him, doesnt mean he has to listen to you. what right do you have?

      @thurloat Thank you for having a level-headed point of view on these things.

      I don't understand why online discourse is sometimes so rotten, mean spirited and adversarial. It makes me want to sign off and not come back.

        @michela 👍

        it really rubs be the wrong way because so many people talk about mastodon and self-moderation as being better to protect against harassment. shoe doesn't fit both feet I suppose.

          @thurloat yah. That bothers me too.

          It's ridiculous. The idea of self-moderation was brought about by the big tech companies because they don't want to pay for moderators to keep their platforms safe.

          Without some controls and higher authorities, things descend into a hostile cesspool, and well intentioned people will leave. That's why Reddit and Twitter are so awful, and are overrun with trolls and bots -- they have practically no rules or moderators.
