#BeWelcome is a strictly not-for-profit, volunteer-run fork of the popular #CouchSurfing hospitality network. Here is th #FreeCode software they use to run their site.

I wonder if #ActivityPub could be used to federate BeWelcome with other platforms for non-commercial hospitality-sharing (unlike AirBnB and BookABatch which are commercial)? I'm not sure how many there are, or how compatible their goals and systems are, but I know there is also HospitalityClub.org, HelpX.net, WarmShowers.org, Workaway.info and the various WWOOF schemes.

Yes definitely! This is one of the use cases I have in mind for https://gitlab.com/OpenCoop/CommonsPub/Server and work on extending ActivityPub we're doing with @lynnfoster @bhaugen @bernini @matslats and folks from Mutual Aid Network in the US

From what I've been reading about the history of #BeWelcome (http://www.bevolunteer.org/about-bevolunteer/history/), it sounds like #CouchSurfing and #HospitalityClub are proprietary #DataFarms, so I doubt they'd be interested in federation. But maybe BW and #TrustRoots.org would, and it would intriguing to find out where #HelpX, #Workaway, #WarmShowers, and any other existing hospitality exchange sites fit into this picture.

I spoke to devs. of trustroots. They do not have really any interest in federation.

Thought this might change if a dev steps into their circle doing a proposal and being able to do the work.

If not, maybe building a new one that starts as a 'couchsurfing for fediversers'. (hubzilla with it's plugin system might sounds suitable build on top of it. )

what you need for a couchsurfing plattform:

            - a map
            - reviews/rating
            - method to decide to whom it's visable
            - chat
            - global search

@paulfree14 ... and a huge database of people willing to share their homes with strangers they just me on the net. Which is by far the complicated part. I don't think it's worth further fragmenting the space by starting again from scratch. Some things just don't suit the federation model, and maybe this one of them? After all, there's a lot of trust involved ...
