I had been living my life in ignorance of the weird and amusing fact that 'Little Oedipus/Oidipous was named after the swelling from the injuries to his feet and ankles ("swollen foot"). The word "oedema" (British English) or "edema" (American English) is from this same Greek word for swelling: οἴδημα, or oedēma.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oedipus

also the English cognate of the "oedi-" part is "oat" (I guess because of the way that the grain part of the oat plant swells up?). so: Oedipus = Oatfoot
