Teachers are due for a new contract with the province. NDP, hoping to appear "fiscally responsible," will probably ask them to take another zero increase -- except they've done that for three of the last four years already and seem unlikely to do it again. So there are already predictions of a strike, although it's nothing more than pundits making assumptions at this point.

Now, I work downtown and am considered "exempt" because my work is closely tied to the trustees and superintendent. So I'm not part of a union (even though similar work in other public sector places is unionized). If the teachers strike, I'm still supposed to work -- as are members of the other unions, I imagine, but they might go wildcat in solidarity (unlikely, but possible). This troubles me greatly.

I was taught to never cross a picket line. Safeway workers went on strike when I was a kid and my family stopped shopping there until the strike was over because YOU DO NOT CROSS A PICKET LINE.
Easy, right? Except that I can't really afford to lose my job and this is how the system pits workers against one another, even in the public sector.
I hope I'm not forced to put my morals to the test, because I truly don't know if I would pass that test.

@ink_slinger Ugh. Hopefully, the teachers are actually offered reasonable raises.
The future is worth paying for, and the ABNDP should know that.
