By now y'all will have heard about the macOS "Adware Doctor" app that leaks browser history to a domain based in China. Seems bad,no? But surely many "cloud-based" security programs also exfil user data to a remote "cloud" service for analysis?
Let's look at what Microsoft Edge does.
Microsoft sayeth: "If the Diagnostics data setting is set to Full, this browsing history is sent to Microsoft".
When advising about the diagnostics data setting itself, MS subtly pressures users to set it to "Full" with a dark pattern:
"If you set Diagnostics data to Basic, you send Microsoft less data to fix and improve Microsoft products based on your usage and errors you encounter".
Gee, it's sort of as if they're trying to make users feel responsible for the bugs that MS themselves created. (MS fixing bugs is bullshit, by the way. I still get MS Word bugs recurring in Office 2011 that I was getting in Office 2000.)
