I don't really know any coding languages. I'm OK with HTML/CSS, and I know a bit of VBA, but that's about it.

I have very little free time at the moment, but am thinking about learning a new language. Any recommendations on a useful and simple to pick up first language?

    I was thinking maybe Python?

Sooooo many awesome responses! Thank you everyone. Seems like the front runners are Python, JS and Go. I have some research to do. 😁

A lot of people are asking "it depends what you want to do with the code" which is a very good point.

Basically, I don't want to make the big app for Linux or anything, but I would like to do the following:

      - Automation (install scripts etc.)
      - Contributions (bug fixes etc.)
      - interesting stuff - I don't know what I don't know, I just want something that's easy to play with and explore.

      Make sense?

@kev what do you want to do with the language? As a practical thing, JS is probably a good idea, but while it's a useful language, it's absolutely terrible from a design perspective. Not only is the language badly designed, its developer ecosystem is so horrible that the only ones who could argue it's acceptable are people who don't know any other languages.

But, like I said, it's a practical language that everybody should know.
