If reaching out to Mastodon, GNU Social, Pleroma is of paramount importance, then Friendica - diaspora is connected only to Friendica, Hubzilla, GangGo and Socialhome. If it's not important, then try out Friendica (and Hubzilla? since you already know diaspora) to decide which interface and set of features you prefer. All of them have minor drawbacks but it's hard to describe all of them here - because character limits:)
