Halloween is interesting because:
1) it's an equinox holiday that
2) has taken on the primary role of carinvalesque, and
3) acts in that role in both a shallow way (dressing up as somebody else) and a deeper way (general anti-authoritarian subversiveness), while
4) being a feast holiday that is *kind of* a fast holiday because the feast is composed almost entirely of refined sugars, and
5) being an equinox holiday it takes on the semiotics of a thinned division between the mundane & transcendent
