My mother's partner (being the thorough dip-shit that he is) replied to her "My other half did!"

Humiliating her in front of the entire room for no reason whatsoever.

The funny thing is, the American wife also said "We tell people we're Canadians because people don't like Americans".

There's no general dislike of Americans here.

What people dislike are loud mouthed tourists who think they have a right to an opinion on other country's politics.
