    A way to think about it is that Unix can be:

    1. An operating system developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s.
    2. An umbrella term for a family of operating systems derived from Unix(1) or clones of Unix(1).

    also:

    3. A trademark and certification that nobody cares about.

    Ironically, Unix(1) does not qualify for Unix(3) but some versions of Windows do.
