Michela@dazinism Diaspora, et al are really good options. I was planning on starting my own instance, but then realised that it would be healthier for me to get off all of those sorts of platforms.
Honestly, I may leave mastodon for that reason eventually as well. I think that because it's quieter here, one is less likely to be sucked into it in the same way aa other social platforms.
