OK, so I've confirmed that my phone will work in Europe (at least on Vodafone, which all the travel sites say is the best one for travellers in Portugal and Germany; looks like Vodafone isn't in Belgium, so I don't know how that part will work).

I can even pre-order a SIM card so it'll be waiting at the airport Vodafone kiosk when I arrive, which is pretty friggin' handy. Now to decide if I need a voice SIM or if data will suffice.

I think data-only should be sufficient, since I don't really plan on making a bunch of phone calls, but am moderately paranoid about needing a phone for emergency purposes.

Data-only is certainly the better deal (15 euro for 30 gb, compared to 20 euro for only 5 gb, plus limited phone/sms with the voice card).

Probably, in the event of an emergency back home, we could just use WhatsApp or FB Messenger to "phone." And, otherwise, what would I need a phone for overseas? Dinner reservations?
