    – The fact that we as a population have ended up in a situation where we must destroy ever more normal stomachs and intestines with surgery in an attempt to save people from lethal obesity is an admission of failure, says Steinar Krokstad, a Norwegian professor in social medicine, in response to the idea that more people should get bariatric surgery through the Norwegian universal healthcare system.

My response to that, as someone who took up a loan to pay for bariatric surgery: I should've had that surgery a long time ago. There was never any realistic chance that another intervention would've worked, unless it had occurred in very early childhood and had involved my entire family, and honestly, it was already too late for my parents. There never was an intervention. Our doctors and nurses barely brought the subject up.

And further, I think that when you have a person who has clearly been obese for their entire life, it's useless to make ordinary lifestyle recommendations. Far more people should get bariatric surgery. Yes, it's an admission of failure, and perhaps such an admission will force us to make some changes.

If you buy a random food from a supermarket, there's a high chance that it has too many calories. You actually have to hunt for the healthy stuff. There's far too little of it.

Doctors think that telling people the facts will prompt them to change their habits. Hahahaha! That's so adorably naive.

Make reasonably healthy food cheaper, tastier and more convenient to buy than junk, and people will buy less junk. Make exercise more enjoyable than sitting on you bum and people will exercise more.

This is impossible, of course. Eating chocolate and sitting on your bum will always be more pleasant than eating carrots and taking a run.
