For the public, it was mainly entertainment. Only a tiny sliver of Facebook users actually cared enough to delete their accounts. Of that tiny sliver, only a microscopic film of people didn't restore it again later. All this privacy and open source stuff is still just a nerd turf war, I'm afraid.
