      gopher offers an interface to uploaded files. The web requires an html/php layer (directory browser) to provide this. Or you can enable directory browsing on the web with no configurability. Like ftp browsing.

      gopher is also of interest historically as an early way to share files publicly.

      For my text file collection on SDF I use both gopher and a directory browser on the same set of text files. So all I have to do is upload a text file into a folder and it's available on both.
