@YoVinnie @jeremiah I'm actually leaning towards bolt action now. Im looking for home defense and some potential deer hunting, mid to long range. I have a .40 cal champagne handgun for home defense now, so I'm putting off the rational "buy a shotgun" voice inside of me and opting to go rifle first. The 22 just seems less than ideal with potential targets larger than rabbits.

Yo @SLRock A shotgun can't be beat. I keep a 12 gauge next to the bed. If you don't have one in the house, I would suggest that before a long gun.
Single shot bolt actions for accuracy. Remington 700, Winchester model 70, Savage 110 or Weatherby, or...
Plenty of different calibers. I go old school
Since you have .40 caliber, a carbine chambered in .40 is a good option.
Lever action in 30-30 are great deer guns. Plus multiple rounds & you can play cowboy

@YoVinnie @jeremiah @Lordimpala Thanks for the advice. Think I'm pretty well set on finding a 20gauge shotgun (cheaper ammo, close engagement only needed) and a 40s&w carbine for dual purpose ammo compatibility with my pistol, and because it looks like this 4095TS from HiPoint is a US made value I can surely afford.

@Lordimpala @jeremiah @YoVinnie Lastly, for consideration, I do have an interchangeable .38 barrel for my pistol, though I've never fired it. Think I'll stick to the 40.

Yo @SLRock Logical choices. I'm a too much of everything kind of guy so I have 12 gauge.Used to have a 10 gauge but ammo was dear and hard to find. In a SHTF scenario, 12 gauge will be more prevalent than 20. Price difference in ammo is negligible. In bulk 12 gauge can be cheaper than 20.
HiPoint carbines are ugly as sin, but are reviewed well. Never shot one. Price is right and lifetime guarantee made in USA.
Time putting lead down range is the secret to any firearm.
