Postmedia has cancelled it's "Newspaper in Education" program, that gives free papers to schools because they don't want to be in violation of government rules about advertising cannabis (i.e., they will accept such ads and don't want to be accused of marketing pot to kids). How this is any different than newspapers in doctor's offices or other places were kids could access them, I have no idea.

They will replace those free papers with free online subscriptions, but schools have to reapply. Plus, the idea behind the program is theoretically to improve literacy and schools with low literacy rates are also likely to have smaller budgets, more limited access to computers, etc. So...not really the same, is it?

@ink_slinger This sounds like they just want to say, "See? If you didn't have regulations you wouldn't have this problem."

@ink_slinger man, without those newspapers in schools kids will be super spooked when they turn 19 and learn what cannabis is.

@thurloat Yeah, I get that they can't advertise to kids (but then maybe we should treat it like tobacco and say you're not allowed to advertise in, for example, newspapers). Either that, or treat it closer to alcohol and don't be so afraid of something that they're going to learn about long before they're of legal age.
I find it interesting, and a little frustrating, that on the one hand we've legalized it and on the other we're desperately trying to avoid normalizing it.

@thurloat But maybe it proves that the gov't was being honest in saying the main reason for this is to try and kill the black market (and also curry favour among voters, but let's just ignore that for now), because they're essentially saying, "OK, go buy your weed from the store instead of some guy you text on Friday nights, but never, ever talk about it and definitely continue to feel like you need to be a little bit ashamed and secretive about your habits."
