I've been around the fediverse on and off for a good 6 years now. I loved my little statusnet where i could post about more personal life and no one really knew about it.
When mastodon started gaining more traction, the first thing i did, was install it.
i decided even to put it on my main domain, foxiepa.ws. I felt that the software was reasonable enough to do that, and a good enough reason...
My small VPS, kept crashing because of mastodon's memory load, even if i tried to retune postgresql, it just kept happening. I decided in the end, it was better to just drop it.
almost a year passed, and i decided i wanted to run an instance for myself again... I chose to run it on pleroma, because it supported additional post targets supported by mastodon, and literally had been reported to run on raspberry pi's meager offerings.
Pleroma has allowed me, a person who can't really do much due to my disabilities, and lives on SSI's small income, to be able to take back control over my social. It's not killing my server, i can hack it as i need, and it was trivial to set up and work on.
so yeah, i think i somewhat know what i'm talking about here, I've used statusnet, gnusocial, mastodon AND pleroma. i played around with diaspora [though had issues with that and it didn't last long].
