@sim >mother eating [...] a lot of carbs He's a keto evangelist so that's not surprising to hear.
>you destroy the hippocampus with too much insulin and high sugar in the diet Not quite right about the sugar part. Diets high in animal fat cause insulin resistance, which then throws blood sugar and insulin regulation into disarray. That is what causes the thing he's describing. Also, a study on rodents, "Insulin resistance within the telencephalon may underlie the cognitive deficits commonly reported to accompany type 2 diabetes." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2878207/ (no conflicts of interest documented)
>if you're pregnant, make sure to keep the carbs to a normal level He's deliberately misrepresenting what 'carbs' are. Carbs are pasta, cereals, rice and tubers to name a few. Additional or 'free' sugars are refined carbs but they are not *the* carbs.
>recommends breast milk or making your own formula This is actually good advice.
>fasting is the [best] way of regrowing your brain Fasting may raise levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which may have a negative effect. However, there are hypotheses suggesting how fasting may stimulate growth. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3411899/ (no conflicts of interest declared)
>aerobic exercise Agree. BDNF is stimulated through exercise (non-scientific proof is how you can starve off hunger when you're active) and can help relieve stress. (Another rodent study) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4915811/ (no conflicts of interest documented)
>you become B1 deficient by eating too many refined carbs You become deficient by not eating at all or those lacking in B1. Refined carbs are not a food, they make up the product. Apparently, raw fish is an example that may destroy B1 via enzymes but excess alcohol intake is the main cause.
>avoid stress, easier said than done Agree.
>your brain loves ketones No evidence to suggest that. I did find a study from 2016 suggesting ketosis may help with Alzheimer's however there is a declared conflict of interest. I therefore consider it a 'junk' study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4937039/
>because they put less stress on the brain The above 'junk' study suggests uptake of glucose lowers with age and that ketones would serve better. More independent research is needed to confirm that.
@thatbrickster "Not quite right about the sugar part. Diets high in animal fat cause insulin resistance, which then throws blood sugar and insulin regulation into disarray. That is what causes the thing he's describing." That is interesting to hear. I guess if you want to avoid this problem, you want a diet that isn't high in animal fat.
"He's deliberately misrepresenting what 'carbs' are. Carbs are pasta, cereals, rice and tubers to name a few. Additional or 'free' sugars are refined carbs but they are not *the* carbs." I really like the carbs above... don't think that I could go without them! But I will eventually really need to think about my diet when I am trying to get pregnant. I want to give my children the best advantages in life because life will tear them down. I didn't get the resiliency that I hope to give them. "This is actually good advice." I really did like this advice about breastfeeding or making your own formula. Also when he says to not rely on synthetic vitamins... to get it sourced from whole foods I think it would be. Can't recall his actual words. But he does recommend yeast! But yeah, I did wonder what you would make of them. I'm not sure about the fasting and ketones stuff. Although I do accidentally end up fasting through the night and morning at times. ;;
