It's like saying, "I love you." or "I love everyone!" But you literally don't know the person you are saying it to because it is an abstract notion. How can you love someone you don't even know, that you don't take an interest in? I don't really get it. How can you love the individual when you don't even know what they are like?

The same thing occurs for poems or musics. You just love the words.

@mangeurdenuage Hmm... I guess that is one way to look at it. Makes people feel good about themselves to say it?

It can and I don't think there's something negative with it as long as it is sincere, but we are on the internet, poe's law is always running. But it is also undermining yourself to always think that what is posted is done for unethical purposes, it lets us settle in a constant bad mood.
One could also interpret that having it said so often that it as lost meaning to him.

For what I said earlier I thought more about admiring or not people behind the words, since we are mostly in a way of indirect communication we make images that our minds conceive of each other trough the conversations, papers, research, etc... We of course never get a truthful image of someone by these means but what comes from it, I suppose, can be sincere.
For what happened with my brother a few month ago and after some discussions, that based on his relationship, we agreed that we never can be sure to truly know someone even those who are close.

I don't know if this responds to your question. Let me know.

@mangeurdenuage I don't know... but while it is true that we do remain a mystery to a large extent and that we change over time... I mean when people say it without even knowing someone. It's like a platitude that we tell ourselves. But can we truly love someone we've never interacted with? That we don't even know their interests or anything of substance about them to love? What are you loving when you say it? It's very abstract, not a personal.

For me, when you love someone you want to know more about them, you take an active role in their life and try to support them and bond with them. To connect with them as the individual they are. You get to know those small things about them and experience some of life with them. I hope this clears up why I don't believe it when people just say they love me in an abstract and general way.

I agree that it's abstract but I suppose that people don't think that much of that.

From NVC there's a chapter/paragraph that I agree with since I was and am still in that category, the chapter/paragraph stated that even tho languages can be very precise in what we can emotionally express, some people choose to not distinguish them and then choose something that doesn't reflect their true feeling.
