Bobby Moss@emsenn @slightlyflightyone indeed, according to what I heard as a youngster it was meant to be a penance thing that stops people going to hell.
Now if you suck you go to purgatory/hades (depending on your Christian denomination) instead until you're deemed "pure" enough to go to heaven.
It's an afterlife myth as good as any I suppose.
