"One of the key things in tackling any body image problems or BDD is identifying and changing unhelpful coping strategies or, as we call them, safety behaviours. These are things that people do to reduce the chance of their perceived flaw(s) being seen, or to protect other people from having to see the perceived flaw(s). In essence, people undertake these safety behaviours to avoid or minimise what they perceive as threatening situations, and the safety behaviour offers relief from the severe anxiety they would feel if they'd had to endure the situation."
