"Concerns about appearance aren't shallow. In fact, the importance of appearance has its roots way back in history with our earliest ancestors. Their life was tough, and their survival was only possible if they were part of a wider community. But if they were considered hideous, diseased, or badly injured, they would not be able to find a mate, they would not be able to contribute to the survival of the community, and ultimately they would be rejected from the tribe. Left alone in a hostile environment, without food, friendship, or protection, they would face a very uncertain future and would be less likely to survive."
